The history of the department begins with the formation in 2004 of the general education department "Computer Science".
By the decision of the Academic Council of August 29, 2013, the department was reorganized and renamed the Department of Information Systems and Computer Engineering. From 2013 to 2017 academic year, the head of the department was a candidate of technical sciences. L.T.Kurmangazieva. The main mission of the department was the training of specialists in the areas of information systems and computer technology in engineering. At the department, students were trained in the following specialties: 5В070300-Information systems, specialization - Information systems and engineering activities. 5В070400-Computer technology and software, specialization - Computer technology and software systems.
On June 23, 2017, the department was renamed into the Department of Software Engineering and included the specialty bachelor's degree 5B060200-Informatics, master's degree 6M060200-Informatics. Since December 2017, the head of the department was the candidate of technical sciences Zh.D. Gabbasova.
From September 2020 to 2022, the head of the Department of Software Engineering was Candidate of Technical Sciences L.T. Kurmangazieva. Since February of the current year, the head of the department is the master, senior lecturer N.B. Baitemirova.
Since 2019-2020 academic years admission to the educational programs 6B001101 - Applied Informatics in Design, 6B001102 - Business Analytics and IT project management, 6B001103 - System and Network Administration, 7M06101 - Business Informatics (2 years) is introduced. ), 7M06111 - Business Informatics (1G), 7M06102 - IT Management (1G), 7M06103 - Cybersecurity (2G), 7M06113 - Cybersecurity (1G), 7M01104 - Applied Informatics in Design (2G) is provided.
Out students and undergraduates participate in scientific research, annual competitions of the best works in national and international competitions. The results of the research are published in the proceedings of national and international conferences. The best students participate in international programming competitions (IT planet, 1C – programming, web – technologies, etc.). At the same time, our students take an active part in the social and sports life of the University. Every year students and undergraduates of the specialties "Computer engineering and software", "Information Systems", "Informatics" participate in the Republic competition of scientific research and take prizes. In particular, K. Ashigaliev, a student of the specialty 5B070400 - "Computer engineering and software", was awarded with a diploma of the 3rd degree, in 2019 – Orynbai Alisher, 4th–year student of the specialty 5B070400 - "Computer engineering and Software", was awarded with a diploma of the 3rd degree.
