In 1964, the Faculty of Biology was opened. In the 1967-1968 academic year, the Departments of Zoology, Botany, and Chemistry were separated from it. From the 1980s to 1997, the Department of General Biology and Methods of Teaching Biology began its work. In 1997, the Departments of Zoology and General Biology and Methods of Teaching Biology were merged and renamed the Department of Zoology, Biology, and Ecology. In 2005, the Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection was separated from the Department of Zoology, Biology, and Ecology. In 1963, on the basis of the former Gurevsky Pedagogical Institute, the Department of Fundamentals of Biology and Agriculture was opened at the Physics and Mathematics Faculty as a department for training specialists in biology and chemistry. Since 1964, Gurevsky Pedagogical Institute began accepting students in the specialty of Biology and Chemistry.
In 1964, there was only one biology department, headed by senior lecturer R.K. Kabulov. During these years, the following disciplines were taught at the department: V.I. Krutko, M.Sh. Shakirov, R.K. Kabulov taught and graduated from the Kazakh Women's Pedagogical Institute that same year, young specialists R.Kh. Kozhasova and A.D. Dosymbayev were hired. In 1965, K.A. Azhigaliyev, a 1964 graduate of the Kazakh State University named after S.M. Kirov, was appointed to the position of biology teacher at the department, graduates of the Kazakh Women's Pedagogical Institute R.K. Karazhigitova and T.K. Kenzhegalieva were called to work. In 1966, I.A. Melnichuk, a specialist in human and animal physiology, Candidate of Biological Sciences, I.A. Zavyalova, a specialist in invertebrate zoology, S. Khamidullin, in vertebrate zoology, G.Abiltaev, and other teachers were invited to work at the department.
In 1967-1968, the department was formed by 2 candidates of sciences A.K. Daribaev and I.A. Melnichuk, and in the same academic year, a graduate of KazMU M.Zh. Aldabergenova came to the department, a graduate of AZVI K.K. Kammatov, a graduate of the Kazakh State University in 1968, N.K. Aldabergenov, a candidate of biological sciences in 1969 Zh.S. Sadykov, in 1970 B. Kazieva, graduates of KazMU in 1971 B.G. Gapuova, Baibulatova D.N. was hired. In 1972, candidate of pedagogical sciences Z.V. Zemtsova was hired. In 1967-1973, A. K. Daribayev, Candidate of Biological Sciences, was born in the Republic of Uzbekistan and became the first head of the Department of Zoology in the direction of the then Ministry of Higher and Secondary Education of the Kazakh SSR. A. K. Daribayev was the head of the department, who made a great contribution to improving the scientific and pedagogical potential, the material base, and the level of transfer of each discipline. He regularly attended classes of young specialists who graduated from the most advanced university in Almaty at that time. He provided a high level of laboratory and practical training. Sometimes he even rose to the position of vice-rector for research at the Institute, but he died early.
In 1973-1976, the Department of Zoology was headed by candidate of biological sciences Zh.S. Sadikov, and in 1976-1982 and 1984-1993, candidate of biological sciences N.K. Aldabergenov was in the lead. In the 1982-1983 academic year, the duties of the head of the department were performed by senior lecturer Gapuov B.G. In 1993-1997, the Department of Zoology was headed by Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor S. Kh. Khamiev. In 1997-2005, it was renamed the Department of Zoology, Biology and Ecology, which was headed by Candidate of Biological Sciences M. Zh. Aldabergenova.
In 2005-2010, the department was renamed the Department of Zoology and General Biology, and its head was Candidate of Biological Sciences Bisenov U.K. In September 2010, the Department of Agriculture specialties was opened as part of the Departments of Zoology and General Biology and Botany and Valeology. Since then, the Department of Zoology and General Biology has received the name "Biology". Since October 2010, the Department of Biology has been headed by Candidate of Agricultural Sciences Kuspangalieva Kh.K., from February 2013 to September 2014, the head of the department was Candidate of Biological Sciences Atalikhova G. B. On September 1, 2014, the Department of Biology was merged with the Department of Chemistry and renamed the Department of Chemistry and Biology. Candidate of Biological Sciences B.D. Kalimanova became the acting head of the department.
In September 2015, the Department of Biology and the Department of Agricultural Disciplines were merged and renamed the Department of Biology and Agricultural Disciplines. Acting Head of the Department - Master's degree, senior lecturer M. Makhambetov, Acting Head of the Department since February 2016. Candidate of Biological Sciences U.K. Bisenov, Acting Head of the Department since November 2016. Master's degree, Senior lecturer S. Maden, Acting head of the Department since September 1, 2017. PhD Dr. E. Gabdullin, Acting Head of the Department since September 2019. Master's degree, lecturer N. Zamzamova, acting Since December 12, 2019, Candidate of Biological Sciences, since January 14, 2020, G. Atalikhova has been appointed head of the department, and since September 2020 – G. Zhumatova, who holds this position to the present. In different years, the two departments trained specialists in the following specialties: "Biology-Chemistry", "Chemistry-Biology", "Biology-Geography", "Chemistry-Ecology", "Ecology-Nature Management", "Biology", "Ichthyology-Industrial Fisheries", "Zotechnics". Since the 2005-2006 academic year, in connection with the transition of higher education in our country to the 3rd level of training, the training of bachelors in many of the above specialties began.
Since the 2003-2004 academic year, the Department of Zoology and General Biology opened a master's degree program in specialty 6N0607-Biology, training masters of natural sciences. Since 2022, scientific and pedagogical masters have been trained under the educational program "7M01505 - Biology in Education". Senior laboratory assistants and laboratory assistants who worked at the department in different years were responsible for providing and conducting laboratory, practical classes and educational and field practices of the department. These are: M.A. Chapurina (1965-1993), Zh. Bektengalieva (1965-1993), K. Ispusinova (1970-1990). Laboratory assistant K.A. Bazhekenova since 1979, A.K. Sakparova since 1988, G.N. Karabauova has been working since 2004. Since 2023, M. Tazhgalieva has been working well to this day.
Since November 2023, the Department of Biology and Agricultural Disciplines has been renamed the Department of Biology and Fisheries. The department has two doctors of Sciences (Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor S.Z.Sagyndykova, D.A.S.Irzagaliev), 2 PhD (A.Nurgalieva 2022), (Sh.Tapeshova 2022), 4 Candidates of Sciences (Candidate of Biological Sciences U.K.Bisenov, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences H.Kuspangalieva, Candidate of Biological SciencesN. G.A.Saparova, Candidate of Biological Sciences G.B.Atalikhova), 7 senior teachers (master's degree, senior lecturer Maden S. S., Master's degree, senior lecturer Zhumatova G. G., master's degree, senior lecturer Berzhanova M.I., Master's degree, senior lecturer Sakparova A.K., Master's degree, senior lecturer Kopasheva A.A., Master's degree, senior lecturer Zamzamova N.T., Master's degree, senior lecturer Rahimgalieva R.A.) teacher, master's degree (master's degree, lecturer Satibek A.K., Master's degree, lecturer Boranova A. Currently, the department trains specialists in the following areas: 6B01505 Pedagogical Sciences, 6B05101 Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, 6B08401 Agriculture and Bioresources. These are: 6B01511 - Biology, 6B05101 - Biology, 6B08401 - Fisheries and Ichthyology, 7M01505 - Educational Biology, 7M05101 - Biology Based on Microbiology. The work of the department is mainly carried out in three areas. These are scientific, educational, methodological and educational work. In scientific work, the faculty of the department is the holder of grants from the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic and other relevant ministries, and also takes part in intra-university scientific projects, including the commercialization of scientific achievements. Students of the department regularly participate in scientific competitions and olympiads and return with prizes. As part of the educational and methodological work, the faculty of the department publishes its own scientific monographs, teaching aids and textbooks. Various intellectual games, festive events, student creativity competitions, etc. with the participation of students. Events are often organized. These measures will significantly contribute to the comprehensive development and well-being of the future specialist.
