On November 30, 2018, a regional competition of young geographers was held on the basis of Atyrau State University named after H. Dosmukhamedov among students of secondary schools. 12 teams from 7 districts of the region and the city of Atyrau participated in the competition. Teams answered questions and solved practical cases.
The regional competition of young geographers is the preparation for the regional and state school subject Olympiads, which assesses the students' geographical thinking, their cognitive activity, and creative activity. Participation develops children's interest in studying the multisided appearance of the Earth, as, in preparation for the competition, students turn not only to textbooks and atlas maps but also get acquainted with popular science and reference literature, as well as statistical materials, learn to express their point of view and argue answers, solve geographic problems.
During the competition, students presented and substantiated their point of view while solving theoretical questions and provided answers on practical cases. This competition required students to generalize known facts, to use knowledge from various areas of geography, as the answers did not have unambiguous solutions and required a fundamental knowledge of geography. And the students did an excellent job with all the tasks; each of them tried to represent their school and district with an honor. Olympiad is not just an event for curious and interested in the geography of high school students, but a celebration of Geography, a reason to show their knowledge.
The jury members, Professor Nurgaliyeva Gulshat Zhalgabaykyzy, the candidate of geographical sciences, and professor Baymuhasheva Gaini Konsbaykyzy, the candidate of pedagogical sciences, noted theoretical knowledge of students and the ability to put it into practice. After a long discussion, the jury chaired by Zhumagaziyev Arman Zakariayevich, Director of the Administration Department of Atyrau State University, unanimously awarded 1st place among 9th-grade students to Tezekbayeva Moldir from the Kyzbay district school of the Kyzylkuginsky district, 1st place among the 10th grades to Nurmagambet Askarbek and among the 11th grades to Ordabay Madiyar, both studying at the regional lyceum of the “Bilim-innovation” school. Arman Zakariayevich also noted the good fundamental knowledge of students from Kyzylkuga, Zhylyoy, and Isatai districts, who became winners in 2-3 nominations.
By participating in the Olympiads, students perceive geography not only as a school subject, but as a serious and at the same time fascinating science. Many teenagers are determined in the choice of their future profession. So all last year's winners of the state subject Olympiad in geography became students of Kazakhstan's prestigious educational institutions. On that note, last year in the team standings the team of Atyrau region took the first place.
Besides the competition, students participated in the cultural program to familiarize with the university, they talked to the university staff and could directly talk and express their ideas, as well as listen to the opinions and evaluation of their answers. And we are sure that the days spent in Atyrau left in the hearts of the participants the warmest memories and they made new friends, and someone considered studying at Atyrau State University.
